Whether you’re dealing with a warning light, a strange noise, or just looking to price out some new tires, getting a quote from an auto repair shop is easier and more accurate when you come prepared. At S.P.O.T.S., we want to help you get clear answers quickly—so here’s what we’ll ask for when you request a quote.
Vehicle Information
Every accurate quote starts with knowing exactly what kind of vehicle we’re working on. Even small differences—like engine size or drive type—can completely change the parts, labor, and pricing. If you’re not sure about some of the details, don’t worry—we can usually look them up if you give us the license plate or VIN.
Year, Make, and Model
This is the starting point for every quote. Even within the same model line, different years or trims may use different parts, so we need this info to narrow things down right away.
Engine Size
Some vehicles come with multiple engine options, and labor time or parts pricing can vary significantly depending on what’s under the hood.
Drive Type (2WD, 4WD, or AWD)
Knowing whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive helps us quote accurately—especially for suspension, drivetrain, and alignment jobs.
VIN or License Plate Number
If you’re unsure about the details above, your VIN or license plate allows us to look up everything we need directly.
You can find the VIN:
- On the driver’s side dashboard (visible through the windshield)
- On the driver’s side door frame or door sticker
- On your registration or insurance card
Tire Size
For tire quotes, we’ll need to know what size you’re currently running. You’ll find this printed on the tire sidewall—something like 265/70R17. You can also take a photo and send it to us.
If You Are Looking for Tires
Tires aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right tire depends on your vehicle, how you drive, and what conditions you’re driving in. To help us recommend the best fit—and give you accurate pricing—we’ll need a little more info beyond just tire size.
Brand Preferences
Some customers have a favorite tire brand—or one they’ve had a bad experience with. Let us know so we can match you with something that fits your preferences.
Tread Style or Driving Style
Are you mostly on the highway? Driving gravel roads daily? Need something that grips in the snow or holds up to hauling? Knowing how you use your vehicle helps us find the right tread design and performance rating.
Performance Priorities
Looking for long tread life? Quiet ride? Off-road durability? Let us know what matters most so we can prioritize those features when recommending tires.
If You Have a Concern
If something isn’t working right, the more details you can give us, the better. Describing the issue clearly helps us narrow down the possible causes and quote the correct labor and parts. Even if it seems like a small thing, specific information can make a big difference in saving you time and money.
Main Issue – What’s the symptom or issue you want corrected?
Describe what the vehicle is doing—or not doing. The more specific you are, the better we can help.
First Noticed – When did it first start happening?
Knowing when the issue began helps us identify whether it’s wear-related, sudden, or part of a larger trend.
Frequency – How often does it happen?
If it’s an intermittent issue, it might not show up during a test drive. Let us know how often it occurs and under what conditions.
Conditions – Does it change depending on speed, acceleration, braking, or turning?
These clues can help us narrow down the cause quickly. Mention any patterns you’ve noticed.
Warning Lights – Are there warning lights or odd gauge readings?
Check engine lights, ABS lights, temperature spikes—these are all helpful to know upfront. If you’ve had a code scanned, share it with us.
Engine Temperature – Does the problem happen when the vehicle is cold? Or only when it’s warmed up?
Many mechanical issues behave differently depending on engine or ambient temperature. Let us know what you’ve observed.
Weather Impact – Is it affected by the weather?
If the issue seems to come and go with rain, humidity, or freezing temps, that’s worth mentioning.
History – Has this issue happened before or been worked on before?
If the vehicle has a history with this problem, let us know what was done in the past. It may help us avoid repeating unnecessary steps.
Other Issues – Are there other ways the vehicle doesn’t run, drive, or operate correctly?
Even if it seems unrelated, other issues—rough shifting, pulling to one side, strange noises—might be connected.
Maintenance History – When was your last scheduled maintenance?
This gives us a sense of your service history and whether any recommended work might have been deferred.
Previous Recommendations – Were there previous recommendations from us that you haven’t addressed yet?
If we flagged something during a past visit, it might now be the root of your current concern.

Why an Inspection Still Might Be Needed
Even with all the right information, we may still recommend bringing your vehicle in for an inspection. Why? Because symptoms don’t always point to a single, clear-cut repair. And guessing based on a description alone can lead to the wrong fix. That’s why S.P.O.T.S. offers free multi-point inspections. It’s our way of giving you real answers—without pressure or surprises.
